Exams , Ramadan , Residency and Summer- THE Experience

Hey people

Now that Ramadan is done
The exam is done
Summer is almost done
So here is the summary.

Efforts section is ours!
Result section lies with Almighty!

It seemed like I was in a white and black world .
Books were white with black text on them.
The sun was bright with a exhausting day with it .
The fasts were great with a sensation of nausea all Theday long!
The mood was cranky with every effort to be patient.
The throat was thirsty with every end wanting for a sip of water.
The mind didn't know whether to fast , work , study or just sustain. The body was scared to travel even in the comfiest of the cars. The stomach refused to accept any other delicacy other than juice and water.
The books screamed for attention for every day that got closer to exams.
The resident wanted to attend every class , patient and fast.
I wanted to run fast , do every thing.

Not miss on out anything, giving an excuse of other.
This was till date the most difficult month of my life and am thankful to nobody but almighty who gave me stamina to pull it off. My heart goes to every human being out there who was fasting and working relentlessly ! I can't speak for the rest. I found it tough, very tough!

Challenges !

I have dealt with quite many things in life . So , I cannot comment the word CHALLENGE would be an appropriate for it . I would budge down to the word difficult may be?

1. Fasting

With the temperature in Hyderabad as bad as desert . It was tough even for individuals indoors to fast.
Intubations would be there during iftar and suhoor. Undoubtedly, almighty was testing me .
Even if the rest of the shift would be cool , cases would pile up at iftar and suhoor . Most of the time , I would break my fast with juice or water , because I had to rush. Not showing off here. Just sharing my experience. Just in case somebody is facing hard times, trust me they wont end , they make you strong. Just hold your own back!

2. Residency

Residency in any branch of medicine is tough . Specially in clinical sides can totally relate running to and fro in the department for various reasons.

There was one incident that I had an ambulance pick up on a sunny afternoon, I agreed to go for a pick up. I had just written a mock exam at the department, gone home to rest before my night shift . There was a call for pickup. I agreed to go. My body was tired , nauseating after the sunny travel to home , but the resident in me wanted to go . I agreed to go, there was 2 hours of time . I thought to nap for an hour before I make a move because my sleep anyway for the day was gone. I closed my eyes , 3 hours later I wake up to see whatsapp texts and calls . My alarms didnt work . My phone network got awry and was not reachable.  I later got to know that they had called me multiple times but could not reach me. I fell low , because I wanted to be there , I didn't want to make fasting an excuse for not getting my work done. Fortunately or unfortunately somebody else was sent for the same.  Later I counseled myself saying it was Almighty's way of saving me from a burnout.

3. Exams

In residency work and academics go hand in hand.
I want everything! I am the greediest resident you will ever see!  I want my academics , I want to clear my royal college exams , I want to attend skill stations ,  workshops , events , ambulance shifts , do my regular shifts , socialise , learn new worldly skills of survival , travel .

But this month it became all priority story. I was forced to prioritize. Triaging my priorities.
Now I didn't want Ramzan (my spiritual belief) to be the reason of me spoiling my exam. Also didn't want my Exam to be the reason the quality of my fasts would fall.
I would read in whatever time I could grab in between shifts , discussions . Come home tired , freshen up , sit with books. Trust me I've never been so loyal to my books. I would see them everyday in some form or the other.Alhamdulillah. Basically was working hard on studies.

4. Temper

You are hungry. You are thirsty. You are sleep deprived. You can't snack. You cannot caffeinate. Somebody is just throwing tantrums . You want to shout , slap the person. Bur wait. Good manners . secondly Fasting.
Self control!

5. Health

When you're doing so many things at once. Something HAS to go wrong. It was my health. Every other day I would wake up tired , cranky at my family and weather. Pray to almighty to fix things up!

6. Sleep

You cannot have everything. Yes , I was playing with my circadian rhythm. Forgot night or day. My body got so used to the adrenalinised lifestyle that somedays I would just not sleep. Somedays I would be dead on bed hardly moving .

So far so much !
Thank you!

MRCEM OSCE preparation and resources

Hello people Since I have cleared my OSCE in one go, I feel it's my duty to journal what all I have done to make it work.(humble brag). Thanks to ChatGPT for helping me pile up some humble generic sentence to make this blog wholesome.(Just kidding). The MRCEM OSCE exam is an integral part of the qualification which tests the clinical and communication skills of candidates. For Indian students pursuing this qualification, preparing for the MRCEM OSCE exam may seem daunting. However, with a few tips that helped me sail through fine. The thing that helped me the most is acclimatizing myself to the UK Clinical Setting Before appearing for the MRCEM OSCE exam, it is imperative for Indian students to understand the clinical setting in the UK. Sometimes , all they want to see is how you behave , your body language, your tone , and your organising skills. Diagnosis is not a critical thing here. You will not fail if you get a wrong diagnosis provided that you have done it systematically. So

" Consulting a psychiatrist would be a question mark on my spirituality " Said the patient.

Hello everybody  I hope everybody is safe and healthy. it's been a while that I've been receiving lot of patients in the emergency with mental illness ,thought of sharing an incident of its kind. Not sure if its the awareness of mental health these days or the pandemic, I am developing keen interest in patients with mental illness .I try to take an extra effort to make them feel comfortable and try to create an insight of what is happening and offer them options of what all can be done.  Since this it seems like a step towards patient care , I thought I'd share it here as well. This would probably not be the best approach but I welcome any type of constructive criticism , additions or subtraction to my approach because end of the day we are here for best patient care. A 50 years plus old gentleman ,presented to the emergency with the complaints of chest pain radiating to left arm , breathing difficulty, choking sensation in the throat, inability to open his ey

Professional Growth Spurts in EM

Hey all Once you're done with your residency . Things appear differently. Some people have a distant vision about such things while some realise at the moment. Nevertheless, the struggle is more or less the same. Remember going through growth spurts as a child? The too-short pant legs were embarrassing, but the achy limbs and joints made it miserable. Just like when you were a teen and all your comfortable clothes would no longer fit. These are tough adjustments “growing pains,” and they can throw your career way off its trajectory if you aren’t prepared to face them. While moving out of your parent institution is great, not everything is sunshine and roses. You can experience these growth spurts fast or slow. Some people are lucky enough to choose the pace. Some people have no choice but to give in. Confusion , Reduced morale, Unclear priorities , A decrease in productivity is very common.Sudden changes from one organization to another organization can lead to discomfo
